DVR Quick Start

Background Behind Quick Start

My plan was to start building a new DVR from scratch. I did all the research and I was adding up the cost of the components, when I suddenly had an idea.

Could I buy a PC, with some or all of what I needed already in a system, and save some time and maybe even some money? It turns out the answer was yes.

As you read the following you may decide you still want to build a system from scratch, which is great – use the links below. But this may help you build your DVR quicker and easier.

There are two ways to get a quick start building your DVR; upgrade an older PC or buy a new PC to use as a base and add the components needed to make it into a DVR. Follow the link below for the way you want to go.

Old System Upgrade

Click this option if you have a Windows 98, 2000, or XP PC that you want to upgrade it to make a DVR

New System Upgrade

Click this option if you want to buy a Media Center PC and add cards to make it into a DVR.

Both pages have the details on what you need to build a DVR. And there are links to national vendors like Best Buy and Buy.Com with direct links to the recommend products.

If you have any questions, send an email to dvr-qs@how-to-build-it.com.
